Overview
Respondus provides tools that can help faculty create and deliver assessments in Blackboard. Depending on your needs, Respondus can be used to import exams, create a secure testing environment, and provide automated online proctoring.
Respondus LockDown Browser
LockDown Browser is a secure browser used by students while taking an online exam. When enabled, students are prevented from printing, copying and pasting, visiting other websites, accessing other applications, or exiting the assessment until it is submitted.
Respondus Monitor
Respondus Monitor works with LockDown Browser to provide automated proctoring. Depending on the options enabled, Monitor can record a student's webcam, screen, or both during an assessment. After the exam, faculty can review the available proctoring results and recordings.
Setting Up LockDown Browser in Blackboard
Before configuring LockDown Browser, your test should already be created and available in your Blackboard course.
- Open your Blackboard course.
- Open the test you want to use with LockDown Browser.
- Open the test Settings.

- Locate Assessment Security and open the Respondus LockDown Browser Dashboard.

- Find the appropriate test in the dashboard.
- Select the menu next to the test and choose Settings.

- Select Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam.

- Review the available Advanced Settings.
- Select Save and Close.
The Respondus Dashboard displays the exams in a course and provides access to LockDown Browser settings, Respondus Monitor options, proctoring results, and exam statistics.
Optional LockDown Browser Settings - Advanced Settings
Faculty can further customize the testing environment. Options can include:
- Locking students into the browser until the exam is completed.
- Allowing access to specified websites or domains.
- Enabling calculator functionality.
- Allowing printing when appropriate.
Use these options carefully based on the resources students need to complete the assessment.
Adding Respondus Monitor
Respondus Monitor is an additional automated proctoring option that works with LockDown Browser.
Once LockDown Browser has been required for the exam:
- Open the exam's Settings from the Respondus LockDown Browser Dashboard.
- Select Require Respondus Monitor for this exam.

- Review the available Monitor settings and select the options appropriate for the assessment.
- Save your settings.
Recommended: Create a Practice Test
Faculty should consider creating a short, non-graded practice test before requiring LockDown Browser or Respondus Monitor on a graded assessment.
The practice test gives students an opportunity to:
- Install LockDown Browser.
- Verify that it launches correctly.
- Become familiar with the testing experience.
- Test their webcam when Monitor will be used.
- Resolve technical issues before the graded exam.
