This process is only for SHU staff or faculty that have a SHU-issued computer and a networked department printer. These printers are separate from SHU-Canon printers that can be utilized by all SHU members from personal and work devices.
Windows
- Connect your SHU-issued computer to the Sacred Heart wireless network on campus
- Select the Start menu at the bottom of the screen or press the Windows key on your keyboard
- Input \\shuuserprt1 then press Enter
- Double-click the desired printer from the displayed list
- Once the connection is complete, a window similar to the one below will appear
- The printer has now been successfully added and can be used immediately in programs such as Microsoft Word
MacOS
The following steps were written using MacOS Sonoma. The general process is the same on older versions, however the names and UI of certain parts may be slightly different.
- Connect your SHU-issued computer to the Sacred Heart wireless network on campus
- Open System Settings
- Open the Printers & Scanners section then select Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax...
- Click the Advanced icon
- If the advanced icon is not visible, hold the Control key then click on any of the current icons
- Click Customize Toolbar...
- Drag the Advanced icon into the toolbar then click Done
- For Type, select Windows printer via spoolss
- For URL, enter the printer's name in smb://SERVER/SHARENAME format
- The server for most department printers will be shuuserprt1
- Example: ACA-FAC-01 is entered as smb://shuuserprt1.sacredheart.edu/ACA-FAC-01
- For Name, enter the name you want the printer to show up as on your MacBook
- For Use, select Generic PCL Printer for blank and white printers, or Generic PostScript Printer for color printers
- Click Add
- If prompted for configuration details, enter the appropriate choices for your printer (e.g. duplexer, paper trays, etc.)
- The printer should now display in the Printers & Scanners section of System Settings and can be used immediately with programs such as Microsoft Word
