Description

ChatGPT EDU license can be purchased by a department on per individual bases, to grant the user access to the AI tool ChatGPT EDU from OpenAI. ChatGPT Education is an AI tool provided by the university that supports academic productivity, research, and learning.  It offers enhanced privacy protection, meaning your data is not used to train models and access is limited to SHU users only.

You can use it for:

  • Summarizing readings
  • Generating ideas
  • Tutoring and writing help
  • Coding support
  • Creating custom GPTs for your department or courses

While ChatGPT EDU aligns with FERPA, it is not approved for sensitive data like:

  • Student financial aid records (GLBA)
  • Billing or personally identifiable financial info
  • Protected Health Information (PHI)

How to Access

Who is eligible?

Employees with a license approved and purchased by the department can access ChatGPT EDU. Any active university user with a network account can use the ChatGPT chat.

All students currently enrolled in the MBA program are also granted access to a license.  Licenses for this group of people are reviewed prior to the start of each semester to ensure all eligible students are included.

Where and how do I access it?

To access OpenAI's ChatGPT EDU, an active employee will need to receive a license. Currently, the cost for an individual ChatGPT EDU license is $240/year. The department will need to pay this cost using their account billing number. To request a license, please fill out the Special License Request Form.

Once the license is made available, the licensee can use their university network account to access it.

For direct access to ChatGPT EDU:

  • Check your email for an invite from ChatGPT.  To login, use the link provided in the email.  Alternatively, you can go to https://auth.openai.com/log-in-or-create-account
  • Enter your SHU email
  • When prompted for "How do you want to login?", select "Sacred Heart ChatGPT Edu"
  • Sign-in using your SHU full email and password to authenticate
