This article will go over how to access and use the secure desktops, also known as SecureDesk. Secure Desktops currently utilize the software provided by Citrix. Desktop version, uses Citrix Workspace application.
Accessing Secure Desktop Through Citrix Workspace Application
Accessing secure desktops or applications through the Citrix Workspace application is fast and convenient. This method is recommended for your work device - the device you use for this access regularly. This is not recommended for access from a temporary device.
Downloading the Citrix Workspace Application
Staff/faculty devices already have Citrix Workspace installed. If you are looking to update your version or use the application on a personal device, you can follow these steps.
Note: if you use an SHU desktop, you might require technical support to install the application.
Downloading from Secure Desk site
- Go to https://securedesk.sacredheart.edu.
- Sing in with your SHU email and password.
- Click on the grey circle with your initial in top right.
- Select Account Settings.

- In Settings, click Tools tab.

- Select Workspace Desktop Windows or Workspace Desktop Mac and click Download.
- Click Download File. You can use either installer.
- Accept the End-User License Agreement by clicking Yes, I accept.
- Run the installer.
Downloading from the web
If you are a Windows user:
- Go to this link.
- Click Download File. You can use either installer.
- Accept the End-User License Agreement by clicking Yes, I accept.
- Run the .exe installer.
If you are a Mac user:
- Go to this link.
- Click Download File.
- Accept the End-User License Agreement by clicking Yes, I accept.
- Run the .dmg installer.
Accessing the Citrix Workspace Application
- Use your search bar (PC) or launchpad (Mac) to look for Citrix Workspace. Select the application. Citrix Workspace will open.

- You might need to set up the connection with the correct "Store" when first using the Citrix Workspace desktop application.
- If you are greeted by a screen asking you to "Enter your Store URL or email address", please enter: securedesk.sacredheart.edu. Then click Continue.

- On the Store page, enter your full SHU email (ex.: doej@sacredheart.edu). Sign in using your SHU password and perform multi-factor authentication (MFA) as needed.

- You will be brought to your home page.

- Select the desktop or app you want to access by clicking in the center.
- A status bar will appear at the bottom of the screen as the desktop or app opens.

- The desktop or app will begin loading in its own window.

Accessing Secure Desktop Through Browser
Accessing Secure Desktop through browser gives you a choice to open a secure desktop within the browser or Citrix Workspace. You might want to access your secure desktop through the browser if you are on the go or working from home and don't have software installed. Of course, it might just be your preference!
Recommended browsers are Chrome and Firefox.
Accessing the SecureDesk Site
- Go to https://securedesk.sacredheart.edu.
- A familiar sign in screen will open, or you will be signed in automatically.
- Sign in with your full SHU email (ex.: smithj4@sacredheart.edu) and your SHU password.
- Perform multi-factor authentication (MFA) if prompted.
- A welcome screen will greet you if you are signing for the first time or from a new browser or device.

- Click Detect Workspace if you wish to use the desktop application.
- Click Use web browser if you wish to stay and work in browser instead.
- A home screen will load, displaying the secure desktops and apps you can access.

Starting a Secure Desktop in Browser
- Make sure your settings are set to open in browser.
- To check or change to this setting, click on the grey circle with your initial in top right.
- Select Account Settings.

- In Settings, click Advanced tab.

- Click Use Web Browser. Confirm launch preference by clicking Use Web Browser again. If this is not an option, you already have a browser option selected.
- Click on Sacred Heart University emblem to return home.
- Click in the center of the secure desktop or app that you would like to start.
- A new tab will open in your browser and the secure desktop or app will begin loading.

Starting a Secure Desktop in Citrix Workspace App
- Make sure the settings are set to launch secure desktops in Citrix Workspace App.
- To check or change this setting,
- click on the grey circle with your initial in top right.
- Select Account Settings.

- In Settings, click Advanced tab.

- Click Use Citrix Workspace App. If this is not an option, you already have the desktop app option selected.
- The browser might need your permission to open the Citrix Workspace. Select Open Citrix Workspace.
- The browser will work on detecting if the application is already installed.
- All staff/faculty devices come with the Citrix Workspace pre-installed. If you are working from a different device: agree to the license agreement and click Download to install the application for the first time.
- Click on Sacred Heart University emblem to return home.
- Click in the center of the secure desktop or app that you would like to start.
- First, a status bar will appear in the bottom of your window.

- Then the desktop will start in a separate app window.

Using the Secure Desktop
Display Options
Full Screen Mode
Secure desktops typically start either in a browser tab or an application window.
- Click the pull-down menu within the secure desktop.

- Click Full-screen button.

- The screen will resize to take up the whole screen. You will not see the taskbar of your local desktop.
OR
- Click the full screen button on the top right of the application window.

- The screen will resize to take up the whole screen. You will not see the taskbar of your local desktop.
Two-Display Mode
You can split the secure desktop between two monitors/displays to have more space to work within the desktop.
- Press and hold on the top bar. You should be able to move the window while you do this.

- Move the window to where the "seam" between the screens would be so that half the secure desktop window is on one monitor and the other on the other.
- Follow the steps above to enter full-screen mode.
- The secure desktop will open in full-screen mode across both displays.
Windowed Mode
You can use a secure desktop in a windowed mode and resize the window as you wish for better multitasking between your local and secure desktops.
- Click the pull-down menu at the top of the secure desktop.

- Click Window button.

- Secure desktop will resize to a window.
- You can hover over the edges of the window to resize it, or move the window to snap it to take half a display as needed.

Accessing Local Desktop While In Full-Screen Mode
If you only use one monitor/display or use both displays for your full-screened secure desktops and need to access your desktop:
- Click the pull-down menu at the top of the secure desktop.

- Click the Home button.

- Your local desktop will be displayed. Secure Desktop will be minimized.
- To return to your Secure Desktop, click on the display icon within your taskbar.

Safely Turning Off the Secure Desktop
It is important to exit a secure desktop in a correct way to avoid issues and errors within the application that might prevent your future access.
What to avoid:
- When using secure desktop on a laptop, please do not shut the lid of the laptop while connected to a secure desktop. Sleep mode will cause a network disconnect from the secure desktop, which might lock you out of your session.
- Do not shut down your local device while a secure desktop is still open.
- Avoid shutting down your secure desktop by clicking the exit button on top of the window or the tab.
Signing out of a secure desktop:
When you are done with your work, take a break for lunch, or step away for a meeting, make sure to sign out of the secure desktop. This will keep the data you work with safe as well as prevent issues and errors with the application.
- Click the Windows icon at the bottom left of the screen.

- Click the person icon.

- Click Sign out.

- The secure desktop will disconnect smoothly.
